The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System is thrilled to host this informative exhibit about local bird populations from our region's chapter of Audubon Florida, the Apalachee Audubon Society.

Becoming Florida’s Capital
March 1, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Two hundred years ago, on March 4, 1824, Governor William Duval announced Tallahassee as the site for Florida’s new capital city. Local lore attributes the decision to two commissioners sent on a legendary journey, however, Tallahassee’s tale begins much earlier. In this temporary exhibition, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum invites you to explore the historical actions and power struggles that defined early Tallahassee and led to the city Becoming Florida’s Capital. On display from March 1, 2024 through January 5, 2025, this exhibition and related programming complement the City of Tallahassee and Leon County bicentennial commemorations.

This is a Concert of music of the "Great American Songbook" featuring Concert Pianist and FAMU faculty member, Dr, Joanna Sobkowska. Accompanying her will be the String Quartet in Blue, performing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". Also featured on the concert will be Dr.Karl Barton, flutist and Deb Wentworth, vocalist. Dr. Barton will be playing the Gershwin "Three Preludecoms for Flute and Piano". Ms. Wentworth will be singing songs from the era.

The "Great American Songbook" is the loosely defined canon of significant 20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs, and show tunes: including composers Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein II, among others.

George Gershwin first performed his "Rhapsody in Blue" in 1924, thus, Dr. Sobkowska and the Quartet are celebrating 100 years of this incredible composition on the beautiful Bechstein Piano on the stage of the Maguire Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Venvi Art Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of “Dance of Hues,” an exclusive solo exhibition by abstract artist Brinda Pamulapati. This vibrant showcase features 28 original paintings, each a vivid exploration of color and motion. The exhibition will run from May 17th to June 16th, with an art reception on June 7th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

"Dance of Hues" explores the dynamic interactions between colors, embracing the spontaneity of the compositions that emerge when solely being guided by interplay and contrasting hues. It draws inspiration from the concept of movement and expression, in a way that is similar to dance. Instead of tangible objects, hues are the main focus of this exhibition. Each piece portrays hues in varying poses that evolve and flow, similar to the fluidity of a dancer’s body, creating visual rhythm and dynamism through the movement of colors. The canvas itself for her works is a stage for the varying colors to express harmony amongst contrasting hues, and also maintaining balance through artistic expression.

Working primarily with acrylics, Pamulapati incorporates vibrant colors, unusual shapes, and rich textures into her art. Each color choice is deliberate, aimed at evoking emotional responses and challenging conventional perceptions of color. “The vibrancy in the colors acts like art therapy, uplifting the mood and providing a festive outlook,” says Pamulapati.

Brinda Pamulapati’s artistic journey began in India, blossoming under the guidance of world-renowned artist Jacob Pichhadze at the Yazi School of Visual Arts, Toronto. Over the past 15 years in Tallahassee, she has significantly contributed to local arts, influencing cultural programs and bringing fresh perspectives through her dual role as an artist and gallerist. Since founding Venvi Art Gallery in 2015, her engagement with the art market has deepened, enriching her approach to both creating and showcasing art.

Her experience and knowledge also have earned her spots in panels relating to careers in the arts, and as a judge for several shows in Tallahassee and the Panama City Art Center.

She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mathematics from Florida State University and is part of faculty for online university. She currently has her work on display at the Pensacola Museum of Art. Pamulapati is also featured in the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (TSO)’s book "T is for Tallahassee: The ABCs of our Musical City!" for letter T, which features work from twenty-six local artists, one for each letter.

Curating the exhibition is Paloma Rambana, a Media Studies student at The New School in New York City. Rambana has a background in curatorial studies from Sotheby’s and has interned with the Council on Culture and Arts (COCA).

Balder Saunders began playing mandolin at age seven and became a professional multi-instrumentalist when he was 14. Saunders enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and graduated first in his class at the John Philip Sousa School of Music. Saunders moved to Santa Rosa Beach in 2000 and played in numerous bands before co-founding Dread Clampitt with Kyle Ogle in 2002. Saunders demonstrates outstanding skill as he plays mandolin, is a lead and harmony singer, and contributes songwriting to the group. His skill as a writer and arranger adds the perfect amount of intellect, wit, humor, and excitement to each piece.

The Crooked River Lighthouse invites all to join in their festive Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Sunday, May 5, from 6:00-9:00 pm in Carrabelle, FL. Visitors can enjoy local, live music and delicious food amid the gorgeous natural surroundings of Forgotten Coast, under the evening sky. Two local favorites, A Train Stop food truck and Harry’s Mobile Pub, will be serving up tasty eats and drinks including everyone’s favorite, tacos! Admission is free, and donations to support the lighthouse's mission are gratefully welcomed.

Guests can anticipate a rollicking good time with the exceptional talents of Hot Mess, a dynamic 5-piece Zydeco Swamp Pop band based in Apalachicola, Florida. Experience their electrifying performances as they deliver their trademark fusion of powerful vocals, robust bass, soulful accordion and sizzling guitar. With Hot Mess, expect an unforgettable messy and eclectic journey.

Visitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.

For those daring adventurers who are ready to tackle the climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Advance climb tickets are strongly suggested as slots may sell out and can be purchased online at https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com/category/programs-events/ or in the lighthouse gift shop.

Kids can also create their own Giant Vegetable and Giant Flower Gardens to Go. We’ll also have a raffle for some special plant offerings. There’s lots to see and do at the Advent Plant Sale!
