Join us for our monthly meeting on Thursday, May 9th as we are joined by Gloria Jefferson Anderson and Hunter Hill Jr., who will be discussing Emancipation in Tallahassee, and how it was celebrated from 1865 until the present. This meeting is also our annual Business Meeting and Spring Picnic! The Tallahassee Historical Society is providing barbecue while guests are encouraged to bring sides, salads, drinks, and desserts. Members will have the chance to cast their votes as each of our officers are up for reelection.

The picnic begins at 5:30pm and the program begins at 6pm.
All monthly meetings are held in the theater of Mission San Luis, 2100 West Tennessee Street.

Starting April 30 and lasting until June 1, the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present a special exhibit on the most violent and costliest campaign of WWII, the battle to take Okinawa. The battle started with the capture of the Kerama Islands by the 77th infantry Division on March 26, 1945, and ended 98 days later on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army, which had its own tactical air force, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall, the invasion of the Japanese mainland, was to be launched. Operation Downfall, of course, was made unnecessary by the surrender of Japan in September of 1945. Included in the exhibit will be historic photos and Marine Corps artifacts.

This exhibit will open Thursday, April 30 1 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday, June 1 at 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Jacque Bonéy – Owner & Founder of Allegiance Canine.

Jacque Bonéy, a Memphis, TN native, attributes his dog training foundation to shadowing his father who trained in the Mid-South for over 40 years. He has himself accumulated over 24 years of all-breed dog training pulling from his foundations to combine older, tried-and-true methods with modern, simple approaches that can be understood and easily replicated.

After graduation in 2007 from The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga with a degree in entrepreneurship, he founded his company, Barking Pals Consulting, Inc. DBA Allegiance Canine. Allegiance Canine has a 16-year track record of applying simplistic, modern, balanced, and effective approaches to dog training for clients from all walks of life, with varied goals. Services offered by Allegiance Canine include basic and advanced obedience training, working dog training including sport, personal protection, and guard dog components, boarding, and a fitness-inspired dog daycare. In 2021, Jacque became one of the first individuals to successfully certify as a decoy for K9 Street League, the nation’s first professional working dog sport.

Jacque also serves as a board member and the service dog trainer for The Paul Oliver Foundation, a nonprofit with the mission of providing service dogs for veterans with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.

In a plot worthy of "Game of Thrones," Die Walkure (The Valkyrie) opens with twins separated at birth who are illegitimate children of the god Wotan and fall madly in love at first sight! Their love infuriates Wotan's powerful wife, so he is compelled to send his warrior daughter, the Valkyrie Brunnhilde, to ensure that someone dies. These characters, so filled with love and conflict, reveal that the mythical world is not so different from our own. This magnificently staged opera features some of the greatest and most familiar of all classical music including the thundering "Ride of the Valkyries" and features today's greatest Wagnerian singers on our stage.

Greer Grimsley whose "commanding presence and sonorous voice" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) reprises the role of Wotan is joined by acclaimed dramatic soprano Christine Goerke who is celebrated around the world as Brunnhilde. Sung in German with English supertitles. The production is 4 hours 25 minutes with two intermissions. A Tomer Zvulun Production.

"From Grief to Grace" , featuring the works of Paula Gaspirini-Santos, depicts the psychological and relational experience of grief. Through her paintings and poetry, Gaspirini-Santos explores grief as the meeting of the unknown, not exclusive to loss through death, but rather the thing that occurs within us when life changes and we meet fear at the edge of the unknown. When chapters close, when relationships end, when we meet death and loss, when we are faced with choices and sacrifices--all of it requires us to have intimacy with grief.

Through visual exploration and poetry, this exhibition invites the audience into a dialogue, self reflection, and expression of their own grief. The artist believes that one's ability to become intimate with grief is equal to one's ability to be deeply alive in the world. She wants through these works to challenge the notion that grief is reserved for death and dying, but instead that grief is essential for creation and beginnings. What the caterpillar sees as the end, the artist sees as the butterfly.

Grief Witness Hours

During the Opening Reception of this exhibit, Thursday, May 23, there will be an opportunity to sign up for a special 1-on-1 session with the artist. Paula Gaspirini-Santos, who is also a licensed mental health counselor, will be hosting "Grief Witness Hours" where she will sit with those who need a listening ear for their pain to be shared and witnessed through poetry.

Grief Witnessing is an art experiential, where for 20 minutes you will sit in privacy with the artist to share a burden that weighs heavy on your heart. As you share, the artist will be witnessing you through poetry using only your own words. When you are done sharing your grief, the artist will present to you a reflection of your pain written up through poetry. You may take this poem with you, or add it to the "Words Left Unsaid" letters up on exhibition.

We encourage you to become a part of this installation piece and anonymously share the words you have left unsaid. 

Bring your letters in-person, email it to chloe@lemoyne.org, or mail it to the Gallery. There will also be the opportunity and space to write a letter at the Gallery during exhibit hours.
