The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will be presenting a program on Empire Mica by Grayson Shepard as part of their Spring Speaker Series on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 4:00 pm at the Raney Carriage House, 126 Market Street, Apalachicola, FL. Additional Spring Speaker Series events are scheduled on April 20 with Billy Blackman and May 18 with Jack Rudloe.

According to Florida’s Division of Historical Resources, “The HMS Empire Mica was a 465-foot-long British tanker in use during WWII. Built in 1941, it carried fuel for the Royal Air Force. On June 29th, 1942, it was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank 21 miles due south of Florida’s Cape San Blas in 110 feet of water. Today, the wreck is a shadow of the magnificent tanker it once represented after the Coast Guard bombed the stern and bridge to reduce threat to navigation.”

These Speakers events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society with speakers through May on Saturdays, mid-month, at 4pm in the Raney House Carriage House. Local and tourist history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for a number of years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side, Territorial City St Joseph, Early Maps of the area, Niles Register Florida History, the ice delivery industry, Cemetery Preservation, Apalachicola Historic Squares and more.

The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Event on Sunday, March 24, from 7:00-9:00 pm in Carrabelle, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the full moon.

At this month’s Full Moon event, gifted musical trio, “Boats A Rock'n” will be performing a wide range of upbeat, toe-tapping tunes spanning musical styles from reggae, folk, jazz, rock, blues as well as a few originals. This lively group features singer songwriter, Susan David on acoustic rhythm guitar, harmonica and lead vocals along with Terry Koral on lead guitar and vocals and David Riggs on bass guitar.

Visitors can have an after-hours visit to the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens. Guests may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. Recommended donation for this event is $5 to support the lighthouse and help offset the additional costs for these after-hours events and can be made either via https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com/full-moon-events/ or at "the gate".

Full Moon tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event for those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and tower climb ticket reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. Advance ticket purchase is strongly suggested as slots may sell out.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Barden Greenfield is a 1985 graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He became a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) after completing a non-conforming dental residency in 2010. He has a dental referral specialty practice (Your Pet Dentist) in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Greenfield previously served on the AVDC board for multiple years and was President of the College from 2016-2018. He is currently a Board Member of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry. He was the recipient of the prestigious AVDC Peter Emily Service Award in 2017 and AVDC President’s Award for Stewardship in 2020.

Dr. Greenfield is also a veterinary dental educator, lecturing both nationally and internationally.

Brian Mathias is one of three full-time organists for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. He appears frequently on the Tabernacle Choir’s Music and the Spoken Word radio and television broadcast (currently in its 91st year), and also on Piping Up!, a COVID-19 pandemic-inspired series of noon organ recitals originating from Temple Square and airing live on YouTube and Facebook three days a week. In addition to his frequent performances on Temple Square, he has performed solo recitals in many venues across the United States. This concert is part of Trinity United Methodist Church's Bicentennial celebration and is free and open to the community.

Join us to explore three series of prints by Lawrence that capture important chapters in history through his colorful, graphic, and dynamic narrative style.
