This concert was planned in partnership with the Florida Department of State, the John G. Riley Center & Museum, Soul of Southside, and the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority.

With six movements, Mahler’s colossal 3rd Symphony is the longest, and one of the greatest works in the standard symphonic repertoire. His “midday dream” takes us on a journey from the heat of a summer day, to a flowery meadow, through the forest and finally, to a profound conclusion unlike anything Mahler had written before.

Sit in on our open rehearsals to observe the process that brings our concerts to life. We welcome music lovers of all ages to join us at these casual, free events.

An evening of heroes rounds out the TSO’s 2023-24 season. Music from Beethoven’s middle stage of composition, the “heroic” period, takes front and center with pianistic hero Jon Kimura Parker performing the grand 3rd piano concerto. Following this, you’ll hear the 3rd symphony — whose nickname Eroica means “hero” —conducted by TSO hero Maestro Darko Butorac in his final performance as Music Director and Conductor.

More than fifty years ago, the Apollo Program made history by landing the first human crew on the Moon. The Artemis Program, so named after the twin sister of Apollo, will parallel this achievement with a series of crewed and robotic missions over the next decade. In this talk, we explore the geologic, scientific, and tactical maps needed to support such an endeavor and how these products are used by mission control and astronauts for lunar surface navigation. She will also review the enormous scientific potential of the Lunar South Pole, a terrain that hosts some of the oldest crustal rocks available in the Solar System.

We're living in a time when a bad choice of words can tank your career, in a media environment where too many of our fellow citizens elevate being offensive to an art form. Our culture wars have blinded us with fury and we've forgotten the value of mutually respectful disagreement as the foundational underpinning of a diverse pluralistic democracy. We're going to call on the better angels of our nature — and The God Squad — to see if we can get back to a generosity of spirit where we support each other's right to live free by our conscience and beliefs — no matter how profoundly we disagree.
