  • Pebble Hill Plantation proudly announces a special bicentennial exhibition, Pebble Hill Plantation: A 200-Year Legacy, opening January 20, 2026. This landmark exhibition commemorates two centuries of history tied to one of South Georgia’s most significant historic sites.

The exhibition explores the origins and evolution of Pebble Hill Plantation, beginning with Thomas Jefferson Johnson, who established his home on the property in 1825 and created a working plantation on the land that would later become Pebble Hill. Johnson was a prominent early leader in the region and a co-sponsor of the 1826 legislation that led to the formation of Thomas and Lowndes Counties, cementing his role in the area’s political and economic foundations.

Drawing from primary documents, historic photographs, and oral histories, Pebble Hill Plantation: A 200-Year Legacy traces the site’s journey from its antebellum agricultural beginnings through its transformation into a cherished historical landmark and museum open to the public today. The exhibition provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the people, labor, and legacy that shaped Pebble Hill across generations.
