This week a landmark trial began in the case challenging Florida’s congressional district boundaries. A judge is weighing whether lawmakers violated the state constitution by drawing districts to favor political interests—a practice known as gerrymandering.
One of the districts contested in the case is Florida's District 5, represented by Rep. Corinne Brown (D-FL5). It's the same district that ranked No. 3 on this recent Washington Post list of "America's Most Gerrymandered Congressional Districts" by Post graphics editor and data journalist Christopher Ingraham.
But how can gerrymandering be measured? I talked to Ingraham about how he answers that question, how gerrymandering can help explain Democrats' underrepresentation in the House, what people often mistakenly believe about gerrymandering--and why any of it matters.
