Former Senator George LeMiex is hoping to regain a place in Congress by unseating incumbent Senator Bill Nelson. But before he can do that, he faces a crowded field of Republican primary challengers. LeMieux filed his elections paperwork in person in Tallahassee Wednesday, and spoke with reporters about why he believes he should be sent back to Washington.
He took the opportunity to draw a line between himself and his leading challenger, Congressman Connie Mack IV. LeMieux attacked Mack’s positions on immigration enforcement, along with his record in Washington.
“He’s a big spender, voted to raise his own pay, voted to raise the debt ceiling. He’s a big earmarker, bringing home the money to his district. I led the fight against earmarks. They’re part of the reason why we’re so broke in .D.C.,” Lemiuex told reporters.
Polls show him trailing Mack in the Republican primary, but Lemieux says he’s not concerned. He cites straw polls which put him ahead of the Congressman with Tea Party voters. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Senator Bill Nelson in November.
Lemieux was appointed to Congress by former Governor Charlie Crist.
