The birth of the internet gave rise to a hope that an age of universal information would usher humanity into a more connected and shared future, but that all might be changing soon. Digital sovereignty doesn't have a single definition, and is being enforced differently by different nations. The United States forced the sale of the American side of TikTok, the E.U. is trying to give citizens control over their data, and places like Russia are separating from the global internet entirely. All of these policies are aiming for a similar goal: to give countries more control over how their people see and use the internet. But are these policies creating a "splinternet"? What does this mean for the future of your online experience? And are we witnessing the death of the World Wide Web?
