Negron Asks For Suggestions After Failed Medical Marijuana Overhaul

Senate President Joe Negron is asking lawmakers for suggestions after a medical marijuana overhaul died in the legislature. It adds to growing whispers a special session could be coming.

Both Negron and House Speaker Richard Corcoran have suggested lawmakers may need to return to Tallahassee to finish Medical Marijuana legislation.

State lawmakers couldn’t reach agreement on a plan that was supposed to be implementing language for Amendment 2: last year’s voter-approved constitutional amendment expanding access to medical marijuana. It passed with more than 70 percent of voters in support.

Lawmakers got hung up on issues like whether to patients can smoke the drug, and fights over how to add more license holders and whether to cap the number of storefronts.

The amendment delegates rulemaking authority to the Florida Department of Health, but many lawmakers want to have input on how the amendment is carried out.
