After more than 20 years, Leon County’s Second District has a new commissioner. Jimbo Jackson will take the seat vacated by outgoing commissioner Jane Sauls.
Jackson, a school principle trounced his opponent a former county commissioner and school district employee, Manny Joanos. Jackson took about 62-percent of the vote. Sauls had backed Jackson for the seat, and he says he thinks her recommendation helped.
“To have her endorsement is something that I’m extremely proud and honored and mostly humbled by that she would entrust this district to me with confidence and having the confidence in me to be able to lead them into the next era of leadership for district two,” Jackson says.
Jackson says he looks forward to following Sauls’ example of service in the district and he’s got a few ideas for where he’d like to start.
“Road safety and citizen health and welfare should be our number one priority in district two. There are a number of concerns in District Two including business concerns,” Jackson says.
Meanwhile, Joannos says he’s planning to continue his work in the school district.
“I feed a whole bunch of hungry kids every day because there’s not much food at home. I mean it’s what I do. I supervise nutrition services for Leon County Schools,” Joannos says.
And Joannos says Jackson will be his commissioner. He wishes him luck in representing the district.
