The Leon County School District is apologizing for sending out 400 forms regarding students' ability to opt-out of the pledge of allegiance.
The Florida legislature changed state law this year regarding how to advise students of their rights not to state the pledge. Leon County School officials say they were only trying to comply with the law. But the district sent out about 400 forms to parents to authorize allowing their child to opt-out: something that was met with criticism on social media.
Now the district says it’s striking the forms and including the advisory language in its code-of-conduct book. In a statement, a district spokesman says, “Leon County Schools values patriotism, civic responsibility, and the pledge of allegiance.”
