Senator Jeremy Ring of Margate wants to allow high schools to give foreign language credit for computer coding classes.
Some lawmakers in the Senate K12 Education subcommittee called the bill innovative and forward thinking, but others still have reservations about implementation and access. Senator Ring says the bill would prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world.
“Why? Because it’s the fabric of our entire culture, not just in Florida or the US, but globally. This is the great equalizer,” he said.
Ring says coding courses would not be required under the bill, which passed the Senate subcommittee Thursday.
