Leon schools make the state's Honor Roll

Florida education officials have released the state high school grades nearly six months after elementary and middle school grades were announced. Lynn Hatter reports Leon County is on the state’s honor roll list for the ninth year in a row.

Both Chiles and SAIL are “A” schools according to the state, with Leon, Lincoln and Rickards earning B’s. Godby saw its school grade drop down a letter grade to a C this year.

High school grades are determined by a combination of FCAT scores and graduation rates. The district has a graduation rate of nearly 85-percent, about 3.5 points higher than the state average. Leon School Superintendent Jackie Pons says the districts nine-year “A” rating from the state is a group effort.

Sound- “We’re just very proud of the way our teachers have responded, and our administrators our community, students, in these difficult times. And being an “A” district for nine years is something we can all be very proud of in Tallahassee.”

Next year Florida’s FCAT test is going to get tougher to pass. But Pon’s says the district is ready for the challenge. This year, schools that get an A or improve by a letter grade will receive a financial boost from the state, with an award of $70 per student.
