If you're a military veteran at risk of foreclosure, NPR wants to hear from you

Millions of homeowners across the country sought help through a COVID mortgage forbearance, which was set up by Congress after the pandemic hit to allow people who lost income to skip some mortgage payments.

For many, it worked out. But many veterans have run into serious problems getting back on track with an affordable mortgage payment after VA shut down the only affordable option for them in October of 2022. The VA halted foreclosures for all of 2024 while it rolled out a new program known as the VA Servicing Purchase program, or VASP, which has rescued at least 17,000 vets from this predicament. But tens of thousands of vets still need help and the Trump administration now says it will shut down VASP on May 1, 2025. Industry, housing, and veterans groups say that will strand thousands of vets who will lose their homes if there's no replacement program in place.

If you are going through this or have been affected by it, regardless of when you fell behind on your payments, NPR wants to hear from you! If you've already lost your home we'd like to hear your story too.

Sharing your experience by filling out the survey below will help us understand the scope of the problem and what homeowners are going through.

We may reach out to you to find out more about your experience and ask if you'd be willing to do an interview.
