French president Jacques Chirac breaks his silence on the rioting that has shaken his nation for more than a week. Chirac vows to restore order but also pledges to support equal opportunity for all.

In poor suburbs across France, young people, mainly of North African descent, have been torching vehicles, schools and police stations.
