As our north Florida wildflowers die back, and alligators and turtles slow their metabolism and find a muddy winter resting place, millions of birds flock into our area. We talked to two of Apalachee Audubon's most seasoned birders, Juli deGrummond and Don Morrow, to get a few tips for the upcoming winter season, and they did not disappoint. They share what birds we can expect and where to find them. They also share tips for identifying birds in their winter plumages, and tools as diverse as tide charts and birding apps.
Both Juli and Don have previously appeared on WFSU Ecology Blog segments. Juli is a board member of the Apalachee Audubon Society, and she and a few fellow birders explored the areas around Lake Jackson and shared how the lake's fluctuating water levels made it Tallahassee's premier birdwatching site. Don volunteers at the Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge, conducting regular shorebird and migratory duck surveys.
