TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - WFSU celebrated National Reading Month with a series of events for the community to play and learn together through literacy. All of the events were free for families.

The first event of the month, held on March 2, celebrated Read Across America. This annual event is a nationally recognized holiday. Our virtual event took place on Instagram and Facebook and was an initiative to encourage reading among elementary children. WFSU posted videos of staff members reading official Read Across America books picked by the National Education Association (NEA). Viewers were encouraged to make their own video of them reading a book, and to tag @WFSUEducation and include the hashtag #ReadAcrossAmericaDay.

Next, WFSU Education hosted a Family and Community Learning Workshop that was Work it Out Wombats themed, a popular PBS KIDS show. Over two sessions, families learned about the design process with hands-on activities and media. Kids used the create, test, improve model to make 3-D art and become superheroes!

The third week of March, WFSU hosted the premiere of a new PBS KIDS show called Skillsville. This feature showcased two episodes from the new show, hands-on activities and a special story-telling time. Leon County Public Library and Florida Center for Reading Research joined the fun to share additional activities and distribute resources to families.

The final event WFSU Education held was a second Family and Community Learning Workshop, this time families explored the world of Molly of Denali, another popular PBS KIDS show. This event was also held in two parts and focused on “The Big Gathering,” a special event that takes place in Alaska every year. The event engaged families in hands-on learning and celebrated the end of National Reading Month programming.
