An award-winning youth mentorship program in Tallahassee will soon have another way to keep its young men moving along the right road. A big donation from Bank of America will be used to buy a large van.
Tallahassee Bank of America President David Hulse brought the news - along with a big check - to the Omega Lamplighters Mill Street headquarters on Monday, Nov. 20.
"Each year through the neighborhood champions program, we provide the winner, Omega this year, with $50,000 in flexible funding," he remarked, adding that the group had more than met all the bank's criteria for receiving the award.
It was a particularly timely donation, said Omega Board Chair Matt McKibbon, because of how fast the program has grown during its decade of existence.
"We've now gone from around 30-40 young men to over 100-150 young men relatively quickly. Our budget has almost doubled and our capactity has almost tripled."
The Omega Lamplighters provides positive adult guidance and life skills training to young men between 3rd and 12th grade.
The local group has also become a nationally-recognized step dance competitor. Getting the young men to those tournaments will also keep the new van busy.
