Tallahassee marked Veterans Day on Friday. Tom Flanigan reports County and City government hosted a veterans' breakfast at the Lake Ella American Legion post.
Local government folks began preparing the bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits and grits during Friday's pre-dawn hours and by 8 a.m., the Legion was packed with former members of America's armed forces.
Among them was Lynette Halter of Tallahassee. She served 27 years as a naval reservist both at home and abroad and still looks sharp in the dress blues she first put on in 1974. She appreciated the local tribute to the service of veterans like herself.
"It means to me that America is not completely down the drain. When people will come out and say, 'Thank you, veterans.'"
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey had proposed the event when he served on the Leon County Commission 11 years ago.
"It's just one of these great Tallahassee/Leon County traditions that even through COVID was able to survive and it's great to see all of our veterans come together today."
After breakfast, many of the veterans headed for Monroe Street to take part in the yearly Veterans Day parade.
