WFSU Public Media has been awarded two 2023 Green Eyeshade awards by the Society of Professional Journalists. Since 1950, The Green Eyeshades have recognized the very best journalism in the southeastern United States — which now includes print, television, radio, and digital. The awards are given to the South's best in new and old media. Journalists in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia are eligible to enter.

WFSU earned awards in two digital categories. The digital team was recognized with a first-place award for Specialized Site, Not So Black and White: A community’s divided history. The site was created by WFSU Director of Digital and digital team lead, Patricia Moynihan with graphic and design help from Rheannah Wynter, WFSU Digital Promotion, and Chris Womack, FCIM.

The second accolade was received in the category of Digital Media Presentation. Patricia Moynihan was awarded third place behind the staff of The Tennesseean and Chalkbeat for Not So Black and White: A community’s divided history.

WFSU’s first long-form podcast, Not So Black and White: A community’s divided history, was created to investigate Tallahassee’s history around representation and inclusion. This topic was chosen based on observations and conversations with people in academia, social services, and education who have observed that Tallahassee, the capital city of Florida, carries vestiges of segregation that impact the conversations and policy decisions around growth, development, education, and health.

Southerners from the Society of Professional Journalists host The Green Eyeshade contest. Entrant fees stay in the South and are used to run SPJ programs. The contest is coordinated by Jennifer Ellis (Arkansas) and Michael Koretzky (Florida) and administered by Tim Dodson. The SPJ president is Claire Regan.
