WFSU Education To Host Live Virtual Event For Summer Challenge Kickoff

WFSU Public Media

Tallahassee, FLWFSU Public Media’s Education and Engagement team will host their first Virtual Summer Challenge Kickoff event on Saturday, June 6, 2020 from 10 am – 2 pm ET. This event is generously sponsored by Florida KidCare and the Knight Foundation.

WFSU’s Education team has been holding Summer Challenge events at WFSU Public Media for the last seven years, but with the current CDC social distancing guidelines, they will hold this event virtually. The Summer Challenge Kickoff event celebrates the beginning of summer and the unveiling of our new Summer Challenge checklist. The Summer Challenge, and checklist, is a full summer-long program that gives families and children a suggested list of activities to complete to keep them learning and having fun throughout the entire summer.

This year’s Virtual Summer Challenge Kickoff event will give families and children an opportunity to learn about various activities they can complete together at home from many different sources. Throughout the event, every 15 minutes WFSU will share the screen with featured guests from various partner organizations across North Florida, including the Museum of Florida History and the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Guest organizations will present activities, virtual field trips, demonstrations, tours, and Q&A sessions to interact with the audience. Families can watch for the entire duration or choose to watch it throughout the event in shorter increments.

Families can RSVP to this free virtual event here: https://wfsusummerchallenge.eventbrite.com. Registered participants will receive a link to the virtual live event.

SUMMER CHALLENGE CHECKLIST: After the event, families can download our Summer Challenge checklist which has a multitude of items to complete: from science experiments, reading challenges, things to do in the car, and more. As families complete tasks on the checklist, they are encouraged to share photos and tag WFSU and partners on social media using @wfsueducation and using the hashtag #WFSUsummerchallenge. Each activity on the checklist has a point value; families can keep track of their points earned and turn in their checklists to earn prizes at the end of the summer.

Additionally, WFSU’s Education team will be packing and distributing free summer challenge kits from the WFSU Public Media at 1600 Red Barber Plaza, Tallahassee FL 32310, on two dates: Tuesday, June 9 and Saturday, June 11 from 10–11:30 am ET. Families can simply drive through WFSU’s driveway to pick up a kit.
