FSU Expands Suicide Prevention Efforts

Florida State University is expanding its suicide prevention program, with a $306,000 dollar grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The program aims to enable the entire campus community to identify and intervene with students in distress.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that killed 26 people including 20 children in Newtown, Connecticut, we discuss the state of mental health services in Florida and what’s available to help people cope with the tragedy. According to a Jan. 26th, 2012 report by the Florida Department of Children and Families, about 47-percent of all children in the state need some kind of mental health services. And 27-percent of all adults need some kind of mental health assistance.
