Shrinking government remains a constant theme in the Republican-led Florida Legislature, but lawmakers are on a record-breaking streak when it comes to filing legislation.

A coalition of reproductive rights groups says Florida isn’t doing enough to combat the Zika virus. The Zika virus is now affecting more than one thousand Floridians, and public health officials worry the mosquito-borne and sexually transmitted illness will continue to spread.

Following the mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, some Florida Democrats want to make it harder for suspected terrorists to buy guns. But critics are calling the measure politically motivated and ineffective.

Florida’s budget is set for this year. Governor Rick Scott signed the state budget Thursday, totaling $82 billion. 

Work on the state budget will begin in earnest next week. And Florida lawmakers will have a lot less money to work with than expected.

The Florida legislature will convene on Tuesday, Jan. 12 for the start of its annual, 60 day session. The top priority is ironing out a state budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. But to get there, lawmakers will have to address dozens of other issues.
