Two Franklin County correctional officers are facing federal charges for allegedly violating the civil rights of an inmate. Both were arrested by the FBI Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, federal officials arrested 40-year-old William Ray and 43-year-old Corry Fletcher. A federal grand jury indicted them later that day.
According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s office, the indictment alleges both correctional officers conspired to intimidate an inmate, after physically assaulting him without justification—causing him great bodily harm—at Franklin Correctional Institution about a year ago.
Details on the inmate in question have not been released. Their trial is scheduled for July 13 in Tallahassee.
In a statement, Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones says the department has a zero tolerance policy for this sort of misconduct, and they “will be held accountable and will face serious consequences.”
DOC has come under intense scrutiny for inmate deaths, allegations of abuse by prison guards, and cover ups.
