Hurricane Hermine is approaching the Big Bend. It is expected to make landfall to the East of Tallahassee. The biggest threat to coastal areas is storm surge. Tallahassee is the closest big city to the center of the storm and could also see damaging effects.

“We have a lot of beautiful trees in Tallahassee, there will be a lot of trees to go down, which means we’re going to lose power, " says Governor Rick Scott. " We’re going to see flooding. I’ve already talked to the mayor, the biggest concern I have is with this wind we’re going to see down trees, power lines and flooding. We have to be prepared.”

Schools across the region are closed and some are being used as staging areas for emergency response. Shelters are also opening and evacuation notices have been issued in many coastal communities.
