Tallahassee 5th Grader Shows Off His Spelling Skills At The National Bee

students wait their turn during the national spelling bee
Erin M

Rutabaga, fanfaronade, hieromonk, and microfische--those are just a few of the words students spelled during Wednesday’s round of the national spelling bee. A handful of Florida students are participating, including Tallahassee’s Farzan Shiju. The Conley Elementary 5th grader got the word rhopalocercous.

Shiju’s spelled the word correctly, but did not earn enough points from a test he took earlier to move onto the next round. But Shiju might get another shot. Spellers can participate in the bee through the 8th grade.

Just 49 spellers will participate in the semi-finals Thursday. To be included students must have earned a total of 29 out of 36 possible points. Points come from a combination of spelling and vocabulary tests and correctly spelled words during the bee.
