State Senate President Bill Galvano says legalizing sports gambling in Florida is on his priority list.

Galvano spoke Wednesday at the Associated Press’ annual Legislative Planning Session:

“There is an opportunity for sports betting in the State of Florida. It is an activity that is occurring, just not regulated and we are not collecting and sharing revenues from that activity,” Galvano said. “So that’s another area where we will be focused.”

WFSU’s Ryan Dailey spoke with Marc Dunbar, a Tallahassee attorney who’s been practicing gambling law for 25 years, to get his thoughts on what that might mean for the state.

Dunbar is a partner with the Dean Mead Law Firm in Tallahassee and an adjunct professor of gambling law at Florida State University. He spoke about the prospect of legal sports gambling in Florida and the way he feels it would be best implemented.

Ryan Dailey is a reporter/producer for WFSU/Florida Public Radio. After graduating from Florida State University, Ryan went into print journalism working for the Tallahassee Democrat for five years. At the Democrat, he worked as a copy editor, general assignment and K-12 education reporter.
