State Senator Chris Smith says Florida’s Stand Your Ground law needs an overhaul, and, if the task force created by Governor Rick Scott doesn’t move on amending the statute, he says he will. Lynn Hatter reports on Monday Smith released the findings of his own task force – which would do away with key provisions of the law but stops short of recommending a full repeal.
Smith’s recommendations include removing parts of the law dealing with immunity from arrest and detainment which he says makes it hard for law enforcement to do proper investigations. The findings come a day before another group convened by Governor Rick Scott is set to meet. Smith hopes the other task force is open to hearing what his group came up with.
“I’m going to give it to them, whether they’d read it or not…I’m going to get it to them, hand deliver it, mail it, and everything I can to get it to them.”
Smith and other Democratic law makers have criticized the governor’s task force for including many of the law’s supporters. Smith says his task force is more diverse, and also that his report includes dissenting opinions.
