Following the tragic school shooting in Newtown Connecticut, parents, teachers and government leaders across the country and in Florida are on guard. In Leon County school officials are doing their best to set those concerns at ease.
Leon County Superintendent of Schools Jackie Pons is hoping to make it to as many elementary schools this week as he can while parents are picking up and dropping off their kids, to help assure nervous parents their kids are safe . And he’s also reviewing the school system’s safety policy as per Governor Rick Scott’s order. But, he can’t give a lot of detail about what’s in that plan.
“You want to keep that information at the school level. Every school has a site safety emergency plan. They practice these they monitor these. But the last thing you want to do is publish those where everybody can see them, because then if somebody did want to do something, they’d have access to that important information," Pons said
Pons said one good thing that happens after tragedies like the Newtown shooting is that schools can learn new ideas from each other about how to improve safety.
