Grant Helps City Residents Switch To Sewer

Kate Payne

The city of Tallahassee is offering to foot the bill for about 130 residents in Tallahassee’s Southside to switch from septic tanks to sewer.

Saundra Lee with the city’s water resource division says one of the biggest issues impacting water quality in the Wakulla Springs area is the continued use of septic tanks. To help address that she says the city has applied for a grant to reduce the use of septic in one of the most vulnerable areas.

“Of those 200 properties that are in the area where the priority focus area and the city limits overlap, there’s about 130 properties that have sewer readily available. So those are shown by the orange dots on the map and they kind of follow the orange avenue corridor and extend South,” Lee says.

Lee says those residents are eligible for grant money that covers any connection related costs—something that otherwise would cost an estimated $6,000. So far four residents have agreed to the project. City officials are working to reach out to the remaining eligible residents.
