Tallahassee, FL – Florida A&M University has reversed its decision to fire its band director in the midst of a criminal investigation into the alleged hazing-related death of a band member. Lynn Hatter reports the move comes after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement requested all other probes be suspended until its investigation is complete.
The notice of Band Director Julian White's reinstatement comes from his attorney. In a release, attorney Chuck Hobbs said the move to reinstate White is a step in the right direction, but criticizes the university board of trustees for keeping White on administrative leave with pay.
Meanwhile, the reinstatement also extends to the four students who were suspended and later expelled from the university in relation to hazing that law enforcement officials occurred prior to the death of band drum major Robert Champion. Those students are still on campus and prepping for final exams.
A criminal investigation is ongoing, and a cause of death has not been determined.
