FAMU Grape Festival Attracts Thousands

Tom Flanigan

Florida A&M University's 16th Annual Grape Harvest Festival took place on Saturday (8/27).

Thousands of people has a "stompin' good time" at the FAMU Center for Vitaculture and Small Fruit Research on Mahan Drive. There was a 5-K run, tours of the 45 acre vineyard and Rattler Alum and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum greeting festival-goers. He sees the Center and the Festival as a big asset, both to the school and the community.

"And we're just so fortunate to have our own vineyard right here, growing muscadine grapes and the various varieties right here in this area," Gillum remarked.

Over the years, the research done at the Center has produced several new varieties of grapes that have found favor in the commercial wine industry.
