Two Leon County high schools have earned national accolades. Lincoln High and Chiles High schools are being recognized for strong academic performance.
Lincoln High made the Washington Post’s list of "Americas Most Challenging High Schools". The list ranks schools based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given each year, divided by the number of graduates. The list ranks 2,300 public and private high schools, and Lincoln comes in at number 151st nationally, and 28th best in the state. It’s 5th in Florida in non-magnet schools, and the best one in the big bend.
"I am so proud of our students, parents, and teachers for reaching such a great accomplishment. You have done an incredible job of raising student expectations in the classroom and implementing these rigorous standards in a supportive, positive manner," said Lincoln High School Principal Allen Burch.
Meanwhile, U.S. News and World Report has released it’s survey of thebest high schools in the nation. U.S. News examined about 20,000 schools and rated about 6,500 of them gold, silver or bronze. Chiles High School earned a gold rating, coming in at number 459th nationally, and the 29th best in Florida.
*Update: Chiles is the only Leon County high school to make both lists. According to the Washington Post's criteria, Chiles is 291st in the nation and 53rd in the state.
Leon, Rickards and the Florida State University Lab School also made the Washington Post list. Leon High is 429th nationally and #78 in the state; Rickards is #252 in the nation and #47 in the state; and the FSU Lab School is #575 in the nation and #102 in the state.
