Tallahassee's Native Nurseries on Centreville Road had more customers than usual the morning of Saturday, Sept. 21. The reason was a special deal on native plants, thanks to a partnership with Leon County Government.
The deal was "buy-one-get-one-free." And Native Nurseries' Donna Lagare said there were good reasons beyond the bargain aspect to put only native plant varieties in your yard and garden.
"The beauty of these natives is that they're so well adapted to our area that they come back each year and they surprise you with beautiful flowers. But primarily the connection with wildlife."
Meaning these plants fit perfectly into the region's plant and animal food chains. And for those who missed the event and look forward to next year, Native Nurseries' Wildflower Manager Lilly Anderson Messick had some advice.
"Get here early!" she laughed. "We weren't expecting to run out in 2 hours almost. Hopefully the funding will come through again next year for this as well and we are so grateful for the Leon County Office of Resource Stewardship for providing this."
