Havana’s police department is raising money this weekend for a new police dog. The city is hosting a fund raiser all day Saturday.
The Havana Police Department lost its first K-9, Nala to cancer this July. Department officials say Nala played a role in hundreds of drug cases. The department is looking for a new dog that is both capable of supporting drug investigations and tracking to help in missing person responses. But the cost is significant. According to the National Police Dog Foundation, dogs cost about $8,000 and training costs $12,000 or more. Event organizers say there will be live music, raffle prizes and hot dogs near the fountain in downtown Havana.
