The WIC program provides food assistance for eligible mothers and their children. And the Leon County Health Department is offering vouchers this summer to let those mothers purchase their food from local growers.
The Director of Leon County’s Public Health Nutrition Program, Dykibra Gaskin, says the voucher program is a win-win for all involved.
“It’s something that they look forward to every year and we’re glad to be able to help part of the local economy and our local growers. So it’s something that we’re very proud of,” Gaskin says.
Gaskin says the produce from farmers markets can sometimes be less expensive and more easily accessible since farmers markets often sprout up in places where grocery stores aren’t nearby. The program lasts through the end of July
