Sail High School, Sable Palm Elementary and Lively Tech are closed Monday. All other Leon County schools are open. But during an online update Sunday evening, Superintendent Rocky Hanna said no transportation will be provided. He said there’s still too much debris on the roads for buses to get through.
“Although my personal vehicle can navigate the roads, our buses are just not going to be able to pull it off," Hanna said. "There’s too many lines that are still down, trees that are leaning over that our buses can’t clear.”
Hanna apologized to parents for the inconvenience. He said he wants to open schools and help kids maintain their routines. To help give parents a bit more time to get their kids in, school start times are delayed by 30 minutes and absences for those who can't make it will be excused.
The school day will end as normal and before and after school program times will not change. Testing will be delayed and school meals will be served.
Hanna said he's proud of the work he's seen from school employees to keep kids safe and get things back up and running as quickly as possible.
"I've never seen anything like this, but this is when our school leaders are going to step up and lead," Hanna said. "I'm proud of our principals, our teachers, our maintenance staff. This is what makes our public school system so great."
Meanwhile, Hanna said he's keeping his eye on more potential storms coming early in the week.
