Leon Cleanup Heads to Lake Iamonia
For the past two years, Leon County has hosted an annual cleanup in and around Lake Jackson. That effort shifted to Lake Iamonia this year and volunteers were ready to help.
Saturday morning dawned crisp and clear. Perfect weather, said the county's Recycling and Sustainability Manager Tessa Schreiner, to jump in a kayak and start looking for trash and junk in and around the county's northernmost fresh water body.
“It’s a really beautiful day and people have a lot to explore on this lake,” she exclaimed. “It’s absolutely massive! I heard it was something like 5,000 acres when full. A massive and beautiful lake!”
A similar effort for two years running at Lake Jackson had resulted in the recovery of half-a-ton of trash. Helping out on Saturday was Tall Timbers, Florida Kayak School and Tours, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Harry Smith Outdoors and Friends of Lake Jackson.
