Alzheimer's Conference Focuses on Care for Caregivers

Tom Flanigan

Tallahassee's 33rd Alzheimer's Disease Education and Training Conference happened Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Florida State University College of Medicine. A big emphasis this year was caring for caregivers.

The conference's keynote speaker was author and expert Nancy Kriseman. She said too many caregivers give up everything to care for their loved ones, and ultimately become victims themselves.

"People give up their relationships with their friends, with their church or synagogue, with hobbies and things that they enjoyed, because that's what they think they're supposed to do, that their life doesn't matter," she noted. "That's what makes them feel better as a person when you connect and hold on to some of that at least."

Also featured at the conference, the latest on Alzheimer's research and therapies and connecting with the growing number of resources dedicated to Alzheimer's.
