Summer’s here and that means oyster season in Apalachicola Bay.
Oyster season runs from June 1 to August 31, but state officials warn there are important regulations to keep in mind before heading out on the water. Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission spokeswoman Amanda Nalley says the commercial cap is three sixty pound bags per person, but there are time-based restrictions as well.
“From June 1 through July 17 commercial and recreational oyster harvest will be closed Friday, Saturdays and Sundays,” Nalley says. “And then from June 18 through August 31, that harvest will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.”
The recreational oyster limit is half a bag—or one five gallon bucket, and harvesting in East Hole is prohibited.
