Fewer kids from Tallahassee's low-income families will miss their schools' free breakfast and lunch programs this summer. They'll benefit from the Full Summer effort that packed thousands of meals on Saturday (6/6/15).
This year's Full Summer pack-a-thon happened in the Rickards High School Cafeteria.
There were hundreds of volunteers, many of them in teams like local businessman Bill Miller's.
“We like to help people,” he said as his squad filled plastic bags with rice, beans and other non-perishable foodstuffs. “This is a great opportunity and a well-run project that reaches a lot of folks.”
Some just showed up, like Laura Johnson and her four young assistants.
“We just heard about it yesterday and we wanted to be a part of it,” she said. “Why not? It’s such a great thing to do for the community and so they all have their running shoes on and are ready to go.”
Becky Liner, one of the Full Summer organizers, said Rickards had gone all out to help the campaign.
“These kids get it. They know they’re serving their neighbors, but it means a lot to us to have this community support.”
When it was over Saturday afternoon, more than sixty-thousand meals were ready to go to the area's low-income households.
