Tallahassee business leaders are launching a campaign to encourage the extension of Leon County’s so-called penny sales tax.  The push to approve the ballot initiative comes ahead of the Oct. 20 opening of early voting.  Sue Dick, President and CEO of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, says the proposals has broad support in the business community.

“The Chamber of Commerce recently endorsed and supported this extension, and as recently as last week during the Chamber’s annual breakfast meeting, conducted a straw poll that had 97 percent approval rating of the extension,” Sue Dick says.  “We are very pleased to endorse and support the extension of the sales tax.”

The initiative increases the sales tax rate by one cent within Leon County to fund local projects.  Officials point to Cascades Park on Tallahassee’s south side as a project funded by the tax.
