When a comet passes by earth this weekend scientists are predicting it’ll put on a show for North America. Tallahassee Astronomical Society President Ken Kopczynski says experts are predicting so many shooting stars coming from the comet, rather than calling for a meteor shower, they’re expecting a meteor storm.
“What they are anticipating and of course this is a new one for us is the possibility of up to 400 meteors per hour. So that’s a lot,” Kopczynski says.
Kopczynkski says unlike other meteor showers that span a week or so, this storm won’t last long since the comet has a narrow debris trail. Experts say the best time to see the meteors will be between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday. Kopczynski recommends finding a place for star gazing away from city lights. He says it generally takes a person’s eyes about 20 minutes to adjust to the dark.
