Tallahassee, FL – Grassroots Free School celebrates its 38th birthday Saturday with its traditional party mix of food, games and performance. Margie Menzel reports.

The school is private and based on the work of the educator A.S. Summerhill. Its motto: "The world is my school." As Grassroots flourished, a community of the same name on Old St. Augustine Road grew up around it. And theater - combining the talents of children, parents and neighbors - is the highlight of the yearly bash, says Tandy Seery, a Grassroots parent and volunteer.

"I think the fact that every child and adult who is associated with the school is treated with utmost respect and they really know that their opinion counts," said Seery.

The event includes a silent auction, pasta supper, cake walk, juggling and music. It runs from 3-11:30 p.m. Free admission; pasta supper is $6 for age 12 & over, $3 for 11 & under. Grassroots Free School, 2458 Grass Roots Way. Call 656-3629.
