Tallahassee, FL – Governor Charlie Crist is calling for a 100-million dollar increase in funding for the state's public universities.

In Thursday's meeting of the Florida Board of Governors, the group that oversees the university system, the governor said the money is a down payment of sorts.

"This hundred-million dollars continues our commitment to reconfiguring Florida's economy. Everything's about the economy, and it should be. Economic development, innovation and a knowledge-based economy, that's what the university system is all about," said Crist.

During the meeting he also proposed 7.1-billion dollars for higher education this year, including another 67-million for the state's community colleges.
