With the holiday season upon us, Tallahassee Police are warning residents about protecting themselves from mail theft and fraud.

TPD Spokesman David Northway says the warning comes as mail has been taken from unsecured mailboxes.

“People who are out there who would go to your mail box maybe in the middle of the night under the cover of darkness and take the mail out and go through it and pull out what has your information on it that’s simply for you—meaning your credit card numbers, your pin numbers, your social security numbers, things like that,” said Northway.

A nationwide event aimed at promoting crime and drug prevention awareness will have a much bigger presence in the Tallahassee community this year. The Tallahassee Police Department is partnering with Target to host its version of “National Night Out” Tuesday at Cascades Park.

Every year since the early mid-1980s, “National Night Out” is celebrated on the first Tuesday in August. It was started by the National Association of Town Watch. In the past, TPD Community Relations Supervisor Sgt. Artemus Shepherd says they commemorated the day by assisting locals with own events.

Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo hopes to submit his department’s policies to a thorough external review.  The proposed policy assessment follows a handful of high-profile scandals involving the department.

Police hope the City Commission approves nearly $75,000 to pay for a review by the Washington, D.C.-based Police Executive Research Forum.

TPD Administrative Services Bureau Director Greg Frost says the goal is to make sure the department’s policies align with national best practices.

A recent shooting at a local gas station is the latest in a string of violent crime that’s been plaguing the Tallahassee area, and the city’s newest police chief is weighing in.

It’s been five months since Michael DeLeo assumed his new role as head of Tallahassee's Police department. In that time, he says he’s continuing to meet with different groups and residents in the community. He says he’s also been keeping busy with evaluating the police department as it continues to transition.
