It’s been 18 years since the worst terrorist attack in U.S. History brought down the Twin Towers in New York City. Rickards High School Teacher Alejando Zapata was in the 7th grade and living in Queens when the towers fell.

While a new law allows Florida schools to arm their teachers, the Leon County School Board has unanimously approved a resolution stating they won’t be doing that in their school district.

Rickards High School and Fairview Middle are set to undergo major changes. It's something Leon Superintendent Rocky Hanna says is long overdue. Meanwhile, other schools, mostly located in the Northeast, are getting crowded.

A new health center at Rickards High School will open Monday after a nearly two month delay. The clinic was supposed to open in April but was delayed due to parking issues.

Rickards High School is expanding its services to include a medical center and food pantry, and more programs could be on the way.  A committee led by city Commissioner Gil Ziffer met Wednesday with Leon School Superintendent Jackie Pons.

A healthcare clinic that was supposed to open at Rickards High School is past due. But district administrators say they’ve got everything they need, and the office should open this Summer.

The Florida Department of Education has rejected the Leon County School District’s request to build a new high school.  Numbers show most of the district’s schools are not at capacity.

The Leon County School District is waiting on approval from the Department of Education to move forward with plan to construct a new high school.

Update 5/15/2015 3:10 pm:

On Tuesday WFSU reported the Rickards High School Marching Band had been invited to the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  That was incorrect, but Band Leader Zachery Nealy says the Rickards Raiders have still been invited to a prestigious parade. 

“The crosshairs got mixed up,” Nealy says, “And so, no, it’s not the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as I’ve been advised to say, it’s not the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.  It is the McDonalds Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade.”
