Governor Rick Scott recently gave the nod to several priorities of the state’s first responder unions. Now, those unions are speaking out on what they’d like Florida lawmakers to include in the still-to-be-considered state budget.

A passionately-debated effort to overhaul the Florida Retirement System has now been merged with a widely-supported effort to fix local government pensions.  It’s part of an ongoing push by House Speaker Will Weatherford to get his state pension reform effort over the finish line. But, many spoke out against the now-merged House proposal Monday.

A group of Senators narrowly agreed Tuesday to introduce several bills aiming to reform the Florida Retirement System.

As chair of the Senate Community Affairs Committee, Trilby Republican Senator Wilton Simpson introduced a series of pension reform proposals. The most debated was a proposal seeking to shift recent hires into a 401K-style plan or the new “cash balance” option, thus eliminating the traditional pension plan for new state employees.
