Local Democrats Push For Higher State Employee Pay

Florida gets $12 billion in stimulus money.

Florida gets $12 billion in stimulus money.

Rep. Alan Williams (D-Tallahssee) is pushing for pay raises for state employees.

Williams has filed a bill that would give state employees a 6 percent pay bump. And he’s not the only one looking to bolster state worker's checks. Fellow Democrat and Tallahassee Representative, Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda is behind a bill that would give Florida employees a 7 percent raise, while Tampa Senator, Arthenia Joyner has a bill seeking a 3 percent increase. But Gov. Rick Scott has other plans.

“I put in my budget a bonus plan for state workers. It would be tied to the agency hitting their goals, you hitting their goals and the agency continuing to find savings,” Scott says.

Meanwhile other legislative leaders, like Senate President Andy Gardiner are focusing on pay raises for  forest fire fighters. Scott vetoed the effort last year, but Gardiner is hopeful there’s a chance to get the raises through this time around.
