Coming To A Bumper Near You -- The Gipper

A conservative Republican lawmaker wants to add the likeness of former President Ronald Reagan to the ever expanding universe of Florida’s specialty license plates.

Representative Dennis Baxley of Ocala says he wants to use proceeds from the 25-dollar tags to fight Alzheimer’s.

“Traditionally we’ve kind of steered away from political themes but I think because of his role in the awareness of Alzheimer’s it’s very different, and plus deceased presidents are pretty far off the radar as far as making a kind of political statement.”

Baxley may be just in time. The chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee wants to put the brakes on specialty tags by doubling the number of pre-sales required to produce a plate and doubling the amount of annual sales needed for a plate to stay in circulation.

A Miami native, former WFSU reporter Jim Ash is an award-winning journalist with more than 20 years of experience, most of it in print. He has been a member of the Florida Capital Press Corps since 1992.
